Warning

This article contains many spoilers. If you haven't yet played the original Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 64 and/or Doom (4/2016), or simply don't yet want to know too much about it, stop reading now.

Introduction

If there's any First Person Shooter (FPS) game that I've always loved a lot, it's Doom. Despite not being the first FPS, it sure as hell defines what a true FPS game should be; fast-paced adrenaline-flowing key hunting to find the exit to progress to the next level, killing whatever hostile characters you find along the way.
Not too long ago (I believe at the start of 2016), id Software published a new Doom. This Doom looked a lot like modern-day FPS games, which at first made me sigh with disappointment.
Until I played the demo...

The demo was just plain badass! Even my girlfriend -who doesn't like most modern games because they have a story you need to play out and stuff like that- was in awe at the sight of how badass the demo was. She even went like "This was just the first level?!" when I got to the exit.
So yeah. I've been hooked on that Doom game (henceforth referred to as "Doom 2016") ever since.

But anyway... this article is my own fan-based timeline that connects all Doom games together.

I've done some research via Google, Wikipedia and various other websites to find some more information to help write down this theory and type out my own version of it.

The Timeline

Now, before you go thinking that it's impossible for all the games to belong to one single timeline, I have to admit that it's indeed impossible, but on just one account. And that is that the protagonist of Doom 3 is not the same as the other games. But on the other hand, he could be the same guy, but then Doom 3 has to be considered a prequel of sorts to the other games.
But in my opinion, the Doomguy is the same in the original Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, the Doom RPG and Doom 2016 because that just makes the most sense to me.

The Beginning

Let's put one thing out of the way for the time being. In this article, I'll refer to the Doomguy as "Stan Blaze". This because they named the Doomguy in the Doom RPG "Stan Blazkowicz", which made him a descendant of the badass Captain William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz. However, the surname was changed to "Blaze" a few generations later, causing his grandson William Joseph Blazkowicz II to be named "Billy Blaze" instead. As most of you would know, Billy Blaze is that boy genius known as Commander Keen.

So anyway...

Sergeant William Joseph "Stan" Blazkowicz III was a veteran and skilled space marine of the United States Space Marine Corps (USSMC) who spent years fighting against insurrectionists in Earth's planetary colonies and pirates hiding in the asteroid belt. Then on one faithful day, his commanding officer ordered his unit to fire upon innocent civilians. Having a strong moral compass, Stan refused to follow this order and subsequently assaulted the commanding officer. The commanding officer got sent to Pearl Harbor in a body cast as a result, whereas Stan got court-martialed because of his insubordination, and was punitively posted to Mars to babysit the scientists, 50 million miles from any action. For three years, Stan's assignment was to protect the nuclear waste processing plants, though his day mostly consisted of sucking dust and watching restricted flicks in the rec room.
The Martian space marine base acted as security for the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC), a multi-planetary and military-industrial conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos, performing secret experiments with teleportation by creating gateways between them.
Founded in 2015, the UAC originally focused on weapon and defense contracts, but had also et up a scientific research facility to research into fields such as teleportation, biological research, advanced weapon designs and space exploration. With unlimited funds and the ability to engage in research outside of moral and legal obligations, the UAC controls the most advanced technology ever conceived, and had soon become the largest corporate entity in existence.

Mars itself, however, was considered by space marines to be the dullest assignment imaginable.

During the three years of Stan being on Mars, the military -UAC's biggest supplier- had used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel. Up to that point they had been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. However, the Gateways had too soon grown dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them had either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity - babbling vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports stated that the research was suffering a small set-back, but everything seemed under control.

This all changed when the UAC experiments went horribly wrong. Computer systems on Phobos malfunctioned, Deimos completely disappeared from the sky, and Mars received a garbled message from Phobos; "We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon had been unsuccessful, but it was obvious that UAC personnel had been either killed or possessed.

Stan and his buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. His orders were to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, he heard assorted radio messages, guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence: "Seems your buddies are dead."
Stan was now alone on Phobos, and with his buddies dead he had no way to pilot the ship on his own. Armed with only his standard-issue Beretta 92FS personal sidearm and trusty knuckle-duster, he decided to fight his way through the entire onslaught of demonic enemies throughout the Phobos facilities by himself, hoping to get his hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun that he could use to take a few down on his way out while looking for a way off the desolate rock. Whatever killed his buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing his helmet, he got out of the landing pod, hoping to find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station.

Knee-Deep In The Dead
Stan waged his war on Phobos, searching through the high-tech military bases, waste processing bases, power plants, computer centers and geological anomalies on Phobos to eventually face off against The Bruiser Brothers; two badass Barons of Hell. After plugging the Barons with a vast barrage of rockets and bullets, he stepped into a gateway resembling a demonic grinning skull in a pentagram. He entered the teleporter, and got surrounded with too many demons that constantly attacked and killed him...

But this was not the end... it was only the beginning!

The Shores of Hell
But Stan thought it actually was the end. He died after all... didn't he?
Well, yes. But he still managed to get back up on the Deimos moon base. This, however, caused him to lose most of his weapons and had once again left him with just his pistol and knuckle-duster.
He noticed that he was now stuck on the Shores of Hell. And that the only way out... was through.

He thus fought his way through installations on the Deimos moon base, which appeared similar to those on Phobos, but warped and distorted from the demon invasion and interwoven with beastly architecture. In the meantime, demons had been raising their Tower of Babel.
When Stan finally got there, he noticed four door-like walls around him, upon each he saw something that looked exactly like the Bruiser Brothers he defeated on the Phobos moon base... but dead. And in fact, they looked as if something ate off them.

Wondering what the hell could be big and powerful enough to eat those beings, he pressed a few buttons in the room. Snatching the rocket launcher along the way, he got greeted by a most aggressive roar.
He was approached by something that his grandfather once told him about. The creature once known as the Harbinger of Death... Stan's grandfather's grandfater, the war hero B.J. Blazkowicz, fought this beast, and it was thought to be dead... but it was merely defeated and severely injured.

The beast's right leg got replaced by a cybernetic implant, which was impressive enough... but what was even more impressive was its left hand, which got replaced with a rapid-fire rocket launcher.

This "Cyberdemon" attacked Stan, fueled by vengeance for its fallen demonic comrades as well as itself, eager to put an end to the heroic bloodline.

After an intense battle, however, Stan's done it. The hideous Cyberdemon lord that ruled the lost Deimos moon base exploded until nothing was left but its legs. Victorious, Stan decided to get his bearings and figure out where he was... He clambered to the edge of the moon and looked down to see the awful truth. Deimos floated above Hell itself! He'd never heard of anyone escaping from Hell, but didn't really care about that; he just wanted to make those bastards sorry they ever heard of him! Quickly, he rappeled down to the surface of the Inferno.

Inferno
Upon his way down, Stan got bombared by Lost Souls, each snatching away his hard-earned weapons. Left once again with just his pistol and knuckle-duster, he fought his way through the infernal realm, once again kicking ass, taking names and snatching weapons. Including a new one: The BFG9000.

Officially called the "Bio Force Gun 9000", this weapon launched a massive blast of plasma that could utterly decimate any creature unlucky enough to be caught in its blast. However, due to its size and power, the marines dubbed it the "Big Fraggin' Gun" and even "Big Fuckin' Gun".

After the fight of his life, Stan ended up coming across Hell's capital city: Dis.
He once more had to fight creatures that were now familiar to him, including a new one. This new creature looked like a massive demonic head on four spider-like legs, as well as a chaingun stuck underneath the legs' platform that it used to attack Stan.

Using the power of the BFG, Stan made sure that this loathsome spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases and caused so much death has had its ass kicked for all time. A hidden doorway opened and Stan entered. He's proven too tough for Hell to contain, and Hell at last went to pay fair - for he emerged from the door to see the green fields of Earth! Home at last. He wondered what has been happening on Earth while battling evil unleashed. It's good that no Hell-spawn could have come through that door with him.

...yeah. Surprise!

Upon further entry back into Earth, Stan noticed a burning city and the sky having changed from its normal and trusted blue to a sullen, hazy orange... among all this, he saw a rabbit's head on a spike. Stan recognized the rabbit like no other; Daisy. His own pet rabbit.
Needless to say, Stan was now pissed as all hell. Originally, it was only about surviving, but now? Now it had become personal.

Someone. Had. To. Fraggin'. PAY!!!

Thy Flesh Consumed
Overcome with a terrible rage that was fueled with grief, Stan went to fight valiantly against the invading hordes of demons.
After tearing through a slew of the toughest demons yet, he emerged victorious. He guessed that right before his confrontation with the Mastermind in Hell, it sent forth an army to invade Earth. Happy that Daisy had been avenged, Stan set his sights towards the city before him.
Spread before him, he saw more potantial pain and gibbitude as a nation of demons ran amok in the cities.

He knew there was no turning back now. He had to do something...

Hell on Earth (Doom 2)
Stan soon found out the demon invasion had spread worldwide and has wiped out billions, and all remaining survivors had fled to Earth's only on-ground starport to await evacuation. Unfortunately, no ships could take off or land, as the hellish forces had surrounded it in a barrier of flames. Stan and what remained of Earth's armed forces made an assault on the starport, but all of them fell, and Stan once again found himself alone against the legions of Hell.
Deep inside the starport, Stan noticed the demonic presence had started to mess with the technology, corrupting it and changing it into something more unholy. He picked up the pace and pierced into the heart of the base so that humanity might could escape impending doom.

He successfully disabled the barrier, allowing what remained of humanity to fly into space, away from the invasion. Content with his victory, Stan sat down and waited for death to take him... until he got a call on his radio. One of the survivors on the ship told Stan that the source of the invasion was coming from the city near the starport, which also happened to be Stan's hometown. He begrudgingly got back up and made for the city.

Stan found himself at the entryway of the invasion, but with no way to destroy it. Clenching his teeth, Stan jumped in and once again found himself in Hell. "There must be a way to close the entryway on the other side. What do you care if you've got to go through Hell to get to it?"

Finally, Stan entered the lair of the Icon of Sin, the largest demon he'd ever faced. The beast roared an incantation and began raining down summoned demons onto Stan.

Noticing its exposed brain, he began pumping rocket after rocket into it, slaying the other demons around him that it just kept on creating, until the enormous creature bit the dust once and for all. Stan saw this Icon of Sin shriveling up and dying, its thrashing limbs devastating untold miles of Hell's surface.

He's finally done it. The invasion was over. Earth was saved, and Hell was a wreck. Stan pondered for a while where bad folks would go after dying now, but shrugged it off and wiped the sweat from his forehead as he begun the long trek back home, looking forward to helping rebuild Earth.

He's a Man and a Half (Doom 64 + Doom Comic)
However, Stan had become too overcome with the sheer fatigue that was the price he had to pay for encountering pure evil. Hell was a place no mortal was meant to experience, and he had been there. Twice. Despite the constant medical tests and treatments, the military doctors were of little help. In the end, what did it matter - it was all classified and sealed.
The nightmares continued. Demons, so many Demons; relentless, pouring through. During each nightmare, Stan came across and used a Berserk Stim, and went through a facility much like the ones on Phobos and Deimos to bring down a Cyberdemon. But he'd been killed by Cacodemons' blasts before having been able to reach the BFG9000 every time... until the last time.
During that very last time, Stan finally realized that he wasn't just a mere mortal. He was more than that. He was a Sergeant of the United States Space Marine Corps. And he's been to Hell, more than once. And survived each time.
Either way, he had now found a way to start becoming what he would become, blasting demons whilst searching for, and obtaining, the BFG9000. Using the BFG9000, he killed the Cyberdemon with a single blast. Feeling triumphant of finally having ovecome his nightmares, he woke up again.
The governments of Earth in the meantime decided to quarantine all areas related to the demon invasion. Time passed, and Earth received a message from a distant satellite relay showing what seemed to be the impossible: the forces of Hell had returned under the command of a Mother Demon, whose unholy powers had brought the dead back to life, mutated and meaner than ever. It seemed Stan's mission wasn't quite done yet, and as the only survivor of the last invasion with any experience, he was sent back to finish the job.
Stan laughed to himself over the familiarity of the situation he was in as he entered through the demon's Hellgate, remarking on how easy it was. So easy, almost as if it was done on purpose. Stan didn't care much for demon tricks any longer. If they wanted him to come, he would come. He would show them what Hell really is.

There was too little time for words, and too many demons to kill.

Finally, he entered the lair of the Mother Demon.

Demon after demon poured out of the gates. Eventually, Stan managed to seal their life force away via a hellish new weapon he found: The Unmaker. The horrendous Mother Demon finally reared its head.

Despite its powerful magic, it succumbed to Stan's overwhelming firepower and exploded. Finally, the evil was defeated... but instead of looking for a way out, Stan stood in defiance as blood poured from his eyes. He was the only marine to endure the slaughter that cost the life of so many of his fellows, so he decided to remain in Hell, ensuring that no demon would ever rise again.

Pre-Argent Times (Before Doom 2016)
Stan began his one-man crusade to eradicate the denizens of Hell so another invasion could never occur. His pure power and rage were so strong it scared the demons to no end. They called Stan many names: The Hell Walker, The Unchained Predator... The Doom Slayer. He became Hell's boogeyman.

Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul got blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, moreso because he consciously chose the path of perpetual torment. He didn't find any peace in his ravenous hatred, but that didn't matter to him. With boiling blood, he scoured the Umbral Plains to seek vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him and so many of his buddies and innocent people.

The more powerful demons of Hell obviously refused to just stand by and let Stan murder their minions. A Great One stepped up to take on Stan, which the demons called The Titan. The Titan fell.

In his constant rage and rancor between worlds and through time, Stan came across an order of "knights" of the Argent D'Nur world; the Night Sentinels.
He went with the Night Sentinels over to their world, assisting the alien to fight off its own invasion from Hell. They were so impressed by Stan's immense hatred toward the infernal race, and even moreso his efficiently brutal way to deal with them with the aid of the Unmaker, that they granted him the honour to wear the crown of the Night Sentinels.
At some point, the demons could recount an unnamed betrayer called "the wretch" who was a fan of the Night Sentinels' work, and crafted Stan a power armor suit wrought in the forges of Hell, impenetrable and unyielding, and soon proven to be much more efficient than his standard Space Marine armor: The Praetor Suit.
While the Praetor Suit has the Night Sentinels' symbol on it, it is far different from their armor, having a futuristic and military look, whereas the Night Sentinels have armor closely resembling that of medieval European civilization.A now seemingly invincible Doom Slayer brought forth death and destruction at a rate previously thought impossible.

However, just as total extinction was looking like a real possibility for the demons, a plan was schemed. Knowing just how much Stan loved weapons, they laid out a trap. When Stan took the bait, blood priests brought the roof down on him and sealed him away in a cursed sarcophagus, then sealed the crypt with countless runes. A symbol was etched onto the crypt: the mark of the Doom Slayer, serving as a warning for all demon that the terror within must never be allowed to wake from his tomb. There he lay still, and ever more, in silent suffering.

On Earth, things appeared to have gone surprisingly swimmingly. Humanity had rebuilt enough to a point where space travel had begun again, and the UAC discovered something rather interesting on Mars: Argent energy.

Argent Times (Doom 2016)
Some time during his slumber, Stan was retrieved by the UAC where he was "held captive" and studied, until he heard someone talking to him in his head; "They are rage, brutal, without mercy. But you. You will be worse. Rip and tear, until it is done."
Hearing this, he knew that Hell was invading Mars, forcing him to escape. He had little trouble breaking his chains, crushing a Possessed Scientist's skull and getting free to arm himself with a laser pistol with unlimited ammunition, after which he suited up in his Praetor Suit and began to once again fight the hordes of Hell.

So what about Doom 3 then? Should that be set aside, despite it being a part of the Doom franchise and created by id Software luminaries like programmer John Carmack.

Well, as much as I'd like to do that since I don't really consider Doom 3 to be a Doom game (and consider Doom 64 to be the real Doom 3), I still choose to respect it as such.

Some time during Stan's rampage in Hell, the UAC found relics of an ancient civilization, one that had clearly encountered the Hell dimension by dabbling with teleportation. That civilization was ultimately wiped out, though a lone "hero" managed to defeat them. The remnants of Mars relocated to nearby planets, including Earth, to try and start over...

So why exactly do I consider Doom 3 to be an entirely separate game, then? That's simple. He has much more trouble dealing with the demons, and moreso the Cyberdemon - which he could only kill or even harm with the Soul Cube. It would make no sense to have Doom 3's marine the same as the one from "1" and 2, except if 3 is to be considered a prequel. But that's not possible, since it's taking place later in time.

Either way... this theory was typed out to make the Doomguy -whom I called Stan Blaze, the descendant of Captain William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz I and William Joseph "Billy Blaze" Blazkowicz II (AKA, Commander Keen)- into the very hero who fought the legions of Hell more than once, ultimately gaining the reward of the Praetor Suit for it to unleash his rage upon the infernal evils once more.
It could all be just bullshit what I typed out here... but it just makes sense to me. And that's all that really counts for a fan, now doesn't it?
